3rd High End Visualization Workshop Open issues in visualization with special concentration on Astrophysics, Numerical Relativity and High Performance Computing http://astro.uibk.ac.at/vizworkshop2006/ This year's featuring: Public Relations and Public Outreach of Scientific Visualization 1st Call for Participation Please forward to anyone interested. Arrival day: 24. April 2006 Date: 25. - 28. April 2006 Location: Obergurgl University Center (Innsbruck, Austria) http://obergurgl.uibk.ac.at/ Organization Committee: Werner Benger, CCT Susanne Milde, Milde Marketing Science Communication Wolfgang Kapferer, UIBK John Shalf, LBL Manuel Tiglio, CCT Erik Schnetter, CCT The organisers can be reached at With the increasing establishment of computational sciences as new emerging field filling the gap between experimental and theoretical physics, the importance of scientific visualization for interpretation and study of numerical data is without question. But even beyond use in a purely scientific context, the potential and demand for purposes of public outreach is high. We intend to discuss the issues as to why scientists might be interested on visualizations that do not directly advance their own science, but serve to bring their field out of the ivory tower to the general public. Is this overhead worth the effort or shall a scientist rather stay on his own very focus? What are the demands from journalists and educationalists? What about the science in visualization itself? Would the public even appreciate scientifically correct visualizations or rather accept anything which looks "cool"? What resources can we find to transform and enhance scientific content into a pedagogically appropriate presentation? We intend to discuss these provocative questions in an informal, inspiring atmosphere. This workshop is inter-disciplinary by nature, and as every year we also encourage contributions that are outside the focus topic. =========================================================================== Tentative Invited Speakers: Donna Cox, Professor for Computer Arts at the University of Illinois, Director Visualization and Experimental Technologies National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), Champaign, Illinois John Shalf, Visualization Specialist, Lawrence Berkeley Lab (LBL), California Bernard Schutz, Director of Max-Planck Institute for Gravitational Physics (Albert-Einstein Institute AEI), Potsdam, Germany Edward Seidel, Director of Center for Computation & Technology at Louisiana State University (CCT), Baton Rouge, Louisiana Sabine Schindler, Director of Institute for Astrophysics University of Innsbruck (UIBK) Frank Summers, Astronomer & Visualization Specialist at the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland Andrew Hamilton, Professor for Astrophysics at University of Colorado Stacey L.
