Euler diagrams 2005 CALL FOR PAPER 2nd International workshop on Euler diagrams September 29-30, 2005 PARIS - FRANCE http://www-rocq.inria.fr/imedia/euler2005/ ______________________________________________________________________ IMPORTANT DATES : Deadline for extended abstract submission: July 7, 2005 Notification of acceptance: July 21, 2005 Conference days: September 29-30, 2005 Deadline for full paper: November 30, 2005 CONTACT : euler2005@inria.fr WORKSHOP CO-CHAIRS: Anne Verroust-Blondet, INRIA France Marie-Luce Viaud, INA France ______________________________________________________________________ The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and users working with Euler diagrams. A web search on Venn or Euler diagrams gives around 200000 results. If the pertinence of this representation is now commonly recognized, we remark that it is mainly used to represent the intersections of 2 or 3 sets. However, recent works has introduced interesting developments, which should broaden the use of such diagrams: * introduction of interesting visual properties such as area proportionality * creation of extended graphical system to allow logic reasoning * simplification of Venn diagrams in Euler diagrams when some intersection sets are empty A quick study of these web answers shows that these diagram representations are used broadly in education. Moreover, new domains of applications, such as bioinformatic, diagrammatic reasoning and information visualization are emerging, with challenging theoretical and perceptive constraints: more sets should be represented, drawing and graphic properties should be studied to enhance perception and the aesthetic of such representations has to be evaluated. This is the second workshop in this field. The first one was held at the University of Brighton (see http://www.cs.kent.ac.uk/events/conf/2004/euler/). During the workshop, a significant amount of time will be devoted for structured discussions about the current state of the art in Euler diagrams research and to debate future research directions. ______________________________________________________________________ WORKSHOP TOPICS: The areas covered include (but are not limited to): * Theoretical Aspects o Existence of Euler diagrams o Drawability and control of the layout o Integration of graphical constraints o Logical aspects * Application aspects o Biocomputing o Reasoning o Information visualization o Education o Use of Euler diagrams in heterogeneous systems * HCI aspects o Readability and perception o Aesthetic of the drawing o Evaluation, comparison with other representations ______________________________________________________________________ SUBMISSION OF PAPERS : Original submissions, in the form of an extended abstract of no more than four (4) pages including results, figures and references, can be of the following types: * Surveys of previous research in Euler diagrams * Outlines of current research projects * Position statements * Descriptions of new research * Suggestions for future research directions * Open research questions * Software demonstrations The papers will be selected w.r.t. the topics by the program committee (the list of the program committee's members will be announced soon). Full papers, of up to 12 pages, will be required shortly after the workshop and will undergo peer review before final papers are collected to form the workshop proceedings. ______________________________________________________________________ Full details can be found on our web site at: http://www-rocq.inria.fr/imedia/euler2005/ Please pass on this email to any colleagues who may be interested. We look forward to welcoming you to Paris for Euler diagrams 2005.
