At the close of the Century, the 20th annual Conference will be held in Italy, where in 1979 Eurographics has been planned by the European Computer Graphics community pioneers. EG'99 will provide a unique forum for Computer Graphics researchers, engineers, developers and users to share their experience and to identify new trends, meeting in a country particularly rich of historical treasures. Besides the contributions of visual simulation and computer graphics to the traditional areas and applications, a new challenge for computer graphics experts is now arising: the Cultural Heritage field with its goals to preserve, monitor, and communicate. Integration of image analysis and image synthesis methods are required, as well as advanced techniques for visual simulation based on structural, chemical and physical modeling. Virtual Reality has shown the possibility of re-creating a forgotten world to bring public to a better knowledge of our past history. Multimedia systems have shown how hypertexts and hypermedia can be used to explain complex data as a painting or an ancient book. We expect a cross-fertilization from different disciplines to bring effective advantages to the Cultural Heritage area. All these technologies can now be integrated in distributed systems, simplifying in a drastic way the access to the historical culture. Cultural Heritage is not limited to visual arts: also music, literature, languages, costumes of people contribute to the human knowledge. The European Commission has identified the Cultural Heritage field as a fundamental application for computer and telecommunication technology. For the reason above, the use of visual presentation and simulation techniques in the Cultural Heritage domain has been chosen as the central theme of EG'99. Conference Programme ==================== The technical programme of EG'99 spreads over three days, and includes Refereed Papers, Short Presentations, Invited Papers and State of Art Reports. The two days before the Technical Programme are devoted to the Tutorial Programme and the two days after to the Workshops organized by the Association. * Refereed Papers Refereed papers will be the heart of the technical programme of the conference. Papers are solicited on the suggested topics areas listed below. All accepted papers will be presented at the conference, and published in the conference proceedings as a special issue of the international journal Computer Graphics Forum. Authors are invited to submit original contributions addressing novel applications of graphics in one or more of (but not restricted to) the following topic areas: - Virtual/Multimedia systems - Modelling, analysis, diagnoses and restoration in Cultural Heritage - Acquisition of 3D models - Virtual and augmented reality - Virtual environments and media art - VRML and Graphics on the WWW - Information visualization - Simulation, animation and physical modelling - Human-computer interaction - Geometric modelling - Multiresolution and geometry simplification - Scientific visualization - Medical information systems - Rendering and realistic image synthesis - Image-based rendering - Computer Graphics and multimedia - Hardware and architecture for Computer Graphics - Software and frameworks for Computer Graphics Submitted papers should arrive not later than January 15th, 1999. Material submissions and the revision process will be electronic only. Further submission details, including style files, are available at ; info may be requested to . * Tutorials Tutorials will be given by leading experts. They will address participants at both introductory and advanced level, offering a cost-effective training in the many areas of Computer Graphics and Visual Communication. Deadline for proposals is November 15th, 1998. * State of the Art (STAR) and Panels STAR and panels will provide the current state of affairs in research and applications, and will be presented by leading experts of the fields. Deadline for proposals is November 15th, 1998. * Industrial Programme It will provide a forum on new and future trends in sw/hw technology and applications with talks given by leading industries. A Demo Area will also be set, to give the possibility to present and test both academic and industrial systems. * Short Presentations Short presentations provide an alternative to the paper programme, to submit presentations of late results, work in progress or interesting applications in the 4 categories of: Technical, Cultural Heritage Applications, Animation, Art or other applications. In accordance with the main conference theme, Cultural Heritage, there will be a competition of demonstrations of Virtual Worlds. Short presentation proposals should be submitted as four-page extended abstracts no later than April 30, 1999. Further submission details are available at and info may be requested to . * Audio-visual and Multimedia Show A special evening on computer animation and multimedia production will open the conference. The best submissions will be selected by an international jury. For further information and entry forms contact: . Further submission details will be available at . * The Gunther Enderle and Best Student Paper Awards Following a long tradition of Eurographics conferences, an international jury will select three of the best papers accepted and presented at the conference, and will award prizes to the authors. The one selected as Best Paper will receive the Gunter Enderle Award, which includes a cash prize of 1,000,000 Lit. Conference Venue ================ The conference will be held in Milano, the business and industrial main town in Italy, which also holds outstanding Cultural Heritage sites. EG'99 will take place at ISU, a conference center run by the University of Milano. ISU is near to Milano downtown. Organizing Committee ==================== Conference Co-Chairs: G. Valle (I) and W.
