Enclosed please find a copy of the Call for Papers . You can also find it online at http://www.pnl.gov/wong/cga2004.htm. Best regards, Pak Chung Wong http://www.pnl.gov/wong --------- Call for Papers Visual Analytics Special Issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications September/October 2004 Guest Editors: Jim Thomas and Pak Chung Wong Submissions due: 30 Jan 2004 Acceptance notices: 3 May 2004 Final revisions due: 1 June 2004 The information revolution is upon us, and it is guaranteed to change our lives and the way we conduct our daily business. The fact that we have to deal with not just the size but also the variety and complexity of this information makes it a real challenge to survive the revolution. Enter visual analytics, a contemporary and proven approach to combine the art of human intuition and the science of mathematical deduction to directly perceive patterns and derive knowledge and insight from them. Visual analytics is the formation of abstract visual metaphors that provide the basis for human interaction and discourse about complex multidimensional data. Effective usage of visual analytics can potentially alleviate the ongoing information overload problems. The theme for the September/October 2004 issue of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications is visual analytics. We solicit papers that describe innovative results in this area. Particular interests are paid to technology transfers and applications in various disciplines and communities. Potential topics for visual analytics include: o business and financial intelligence o empirical and theoretical studies of visual analytics tools o human and social network analysis o industrial and manufacturing engineering o information sciences and technologies o life science discoveries o law and order investigations o logistics and operational management o military and strategic intelligence o national security and homeland defense. Preference will be given to papers that present results based on acquired (rather than simulated) data. Papers should be fewer than 10 magazine pages, where a page is 800 words or five images. Cite only the 10 most critical references, and consider providing background in sidebars for nonexpert readers. Color images may be interspersed through the body of the paper. Visit CG&A's style and length guidelines for more details. Authors should submit their paper by 30 January 2004 using our new online manuscript submission service. When uploading your paper, please select the appropriate special issue title under the category "Manuscript Type." Also include complete contact information for all authors and coauthors in the submission. If you have any questions about submitting your paper, please contact Alkenia Winston.
